IGF-1 Ec is an isoform of IGF-1 (Insulin-like growth factor 1). It is also known as MGF (Mechanical Growth Factor) as it is found to be activated in response to mechanical muscle stimuli.
Unlike IGF-1 it does not circulate in the organism, it is activated on the spot and its function is performed locally, stimulating the maturation and growth of the quiescent satellite cells as well as the already existing muscle cells, it also promotes protein synthesis as well as glycogen transport within the target cells themselves. It is therefore due to its presence both hypertrophy and hyperplasia of skeletal muscle cells.
